- Three Wise Guys | Steve French VO
Back Three Wise Guys Steve narrates a full-cast Damon Runyon classic. Source: Hear Play Audio Theatre Author: Steve French Publication Date: Jan 3, 2023 Click here Click here I was delighted to reunite with Scott Alan Evans (one of my favorite directors from my stage acting days!) when he asked me to narrate this full-cast audio adaptation of Damon Runyon's THREE WISE GUYS from Hear Play Audio Theatre. The entire production was painstakingly recorded virtually, with each actor recording their lines from home studios. Audio engineer extraordinaire Daryl Bornstein then worked his magic, weaving in Joseph Trapanese's pitch-perfect music. The result is, if I do say so myself, a Christmas audio miracle! I hope you'll click the button below to visit the HEAR PLAY AUDIO THEATRE page and listen to all three episodes of this timeless Christmas classic, any time of the year! - A Progressive National Network "Challenge"! | Steve French VO
Back A Progressive National Network "Challenge"! A closer look at my latest National Network TV spot for Progressive. Source: SFVO Author: Steve French Publication Date: Sep 15, 2022 Click here Do you ever wish you could check the replay in real life? My latest commercial voice over is part of this hilarious spot from Progressive. It finds a couple caught in a disagreement, which is eventually settled after a challenge flag is thrown and an NFL-style replay unit is called in. I love this spot, and was overjoyed to get to work once again with the team at Arnold Boston , who put such care and fun into everything they do. If you're a football fan, keep an eye and ear out for this one during NFL games this season! The folks at Little Black Book were kind enough to give the campaign a write-up here . BEHIND THE SCENES : My audition for this spot wasn't recorded from my home studio, where I usually do all my work. Nope! When this one came in I was on vacation with my family in Maine, in a cabin in the woods with very little cell service and no dedicated internet. What I DID have was a travel recording setup and my trusty new TRI-BOOTH , an ingenious portable recording booth from Rick Wasserman and George Whittam. I'm so grateful this solution exists, and it gave me the confidence to give a great audition away from the comfort of my studio, and I was able to book this fantastic campaign while on the road! Thanks, guys! LBB Online Article Tags: Commercial, Progressive, Football, National Network, Arnold Boston, Arnold Worldwide, O Positive, Announcer

- Broadway Inspirational Voices in Concert | Steve French VO
Back Broadway Inspirational Voices in Concert It is my profound honor to occasionally serve as BIV's announcer. Source: SFVO Author: Steve French Publication Date: Jun 21, 2021 Click here Some of my most formative experiences as a performer occurred as a member of Broadway International Voices (BIV), the TONY Award-winning gospel choir founded by Michael McElroy . Not only is the choir made up of some of the most talented Broadway singers and musicians in New York City, but their selfless mission “to change lives through the power of music and service” makes an impact far beyond any concert stage or Grammy nomination. Although my schedule has kept me from singing with them for the last few years, it is my profound honor to occasionally serve as their announcer, as I did for their recent concert experience On an Island in the River . This event was bittersweet but exhilarating, as it marked the end of McElroy’s tenure as leader of the choir, passing the baton to Allen René Louis . These two performances at the newly opened Little Island NYC were a revelatory experience for those in attendance. If you weren’t among them, you can check out the entire concert at Broadway.com’s YouTube channel . Learn More Tags: Announcer, Broadway International Voices, BIV, Little Island NYC
- Booking BOBA FETT | Steve French VO
Back Booking BOBA FETT A day in the life of a promo voice artist. Source: SFVO Author: Steve French Publication Date: Feb 9, 2022 Click here What does it mean to be a promo voice? In the most basic terms, the promo voice is the voice you hear at the end of spots for a given show, series, or network. The script is often a short end tag, maybe no more than a few words. You are the voice that tells the audience what the show is, and when and where they can watch it. Pretty simple, right? But it goes deeper than that. Being the promo voice means you are tasked with creating a signature vocal tone for the show, one that will stick in the listener’s memory. Whether they’re watching the promo on TV, scrolling through social media, or just have it on in the background while making dinner, that voice will help cement a show in an audience’s mind. In the case of THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT, I was lucky enough to have been the promo voice of the first Star Wars live-action series, THE MANDALORIAN on Disney+. Thanks to the tireless work of my promo manager Andrew Atkin at ACM Talent, I was still on the radar of Kyle Rodri (VP of Creative Advertising at The Walt Disney Studios and an old college pal) as well as Buddha Jones and BOND , the trailer houses creating the promo campaign for BOBA. But I had to audition just like everyone else! When you audition for a campaign, you don’t often get to see any footage of the show, so you can only go off any direction casting gives you. We were told this was a gangster story, with a sense of mystery to it, and they wanted a different feel than we had acheived for THE MANDALORIAN. https://video.wixstatic.com/video/e4556d_46fcfa8446c9456a99e4da892196b585/720p/mp4/file.mp4 A Season 2 promo for THE MANDALORIAN I gave casting a few different takes, but the one that stuck was a slightly lighter, more mysterious read. I imagined the VO was a character lurking in the shadows of Tatooine, a peddler of intriguing wares who was offering passers-by a sneak peek into something they wouldn’t want to miss. After a few rounds of callbacks, and slight adjustments to the read, I learned I had the job, and the fun began. VO for promos is fast-paced. The spots are created very quickly, and the VO is one of the last pieces of the puzzle to be dropped into place. When I’m working on a campaign, I know I could get a text at any moment from my manager saying, “Hop into the booth, I’ve got a script coming your way!” Sometimes I’ll record a script in the afternoon, and see it on TV that evening. My job is to be ready to go, and have my home studio in order so I can lay down whatever script they’ve sent as soon as possible. These days, home studio technology has enabled both voice actors and producers to collaborate at a much faster pace, and in addition to their trust in me as a performer, I take pride in being able to provide high-quality audio to clients who trust me to get the job done when they need it done. These seven episodes of THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT dazzled as they further expanded the Star Wars universe, and I loved how Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni consistently make their own rules, break those rules, and then make new ones. This is daring, innovative TV, and I couldn’t be more honored to have been the promo voice for their show. https://video.wixstatic.com/video/3b1c4a_cedaa39ace0343dbb6128338837a7105/1080p/mp4/file.mp4 THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Season 1 promo All episodes of THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT are now streaming on Disney+. - Tramp’s New World | Steve French VO
Back Tramp’s New World I’m honored to channel Chaplin’s voice in a scene recreating an infamous NYC press conference Source: SFVO Author: Steve French Publication Date: Aug 6, 2021 Click here Now thru August 10th, Zoe Beloff ’s new film, THE TRAMP’S NEW WORLD, is streaming for free on the National Gallery of Art’s website . Based on an unrealized James Agee screenplay written for Charlie Chaplin, I’m honored to channel Chaplin’s voice in a scene recreating his infamous NYC press conference for MONSIEUR VERDOUX. Zoe is a one-of-a-kind artist, and and I hope you’ll step inside her beautiful brain with a viewing of this film. Here’s more information on this unique cinematic experience: “In 1948 the James Agee wrote a scenario for his lifelong hero, Charlie Chaplin. Deeply disturbed by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Agee imagined New York destroyed. In the ruins, Chaplin’s Little Tramp builds a shack in Central Park. Gradually a small community of the dispossessed grows up around him. For Agee, his story was a thought experiment about how one might start again in the aftermath of disaster, to go beyond capitalism and just how hard that is in the face of our modern technological world. The film focuses on his imaginative journey and what it might mean for us today.” Learn More Tags: National Gallery of Art, Film, Voice Acting, Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin
- ABC Promos Go 1980s Retro in Honor of ‘Live in Front of a Studio Audience’ | Steve French VO
Back ABC Promos Go 1980s Retro in Honor of ‘Live in Front of a Studio Audience’ ABC is dusting off its classic 1981 slogan and jingle, at least for one night. Source: Variety Author: Michael Schneider Publication Date: Dec 7, 2021 Click here ABC is dusting off its classic 1981 slogan and jingle, at least for one night. “ Live in Front of a Studio Audience ” viewers on Tuesday night will catch a retro-style promo for “ Black-ish ” that includes the era-appropriate tune “Now is the Time, ABC is the Place!” It’s one of several spots created by the ABC marketing team to fit into the 1980s nostalgia that “Live” is bringing with its remakes of “Diff’rent Strokes” and “The Facts of Life” episodes. “We could not be more excited to extend the viewing experience for ‘Live in Front of a Studio Audience’ and transport viewers back to the ’80s by creating a series of eight retro-themed promos for our shows to air throughout the night,” said Shannon Ryan, president, content marketing, Hulu & General Entertainment. ABC did a similar stunt the last time “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” took place, in 2019, with a series of 1970s-inspired promos . For this time, here’s the “Black-ish” promo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d68Y7hOROTc And here’s a look at an actual ABC branding spot from the era, which the new promo is emulated from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9HgZxt29xw “Getting the voiceover and music right was key, so we cast a great VO actor, Steve French, who sounds just like one of those classic announcers you would’ve heard on our air in 1981,” Ryan said of the Ernie Anderson soundalike. A few tweaks have been made to the “Black-ish” spot, however: The new ABC logo, introduced earlier this fall, is there — along with a mention of Hulu, which of course didn’t exist in 1981. And in the new spot, the timeslot mention has been altered: Back in 1970s and 1980s, promos usually specified when shows aired in the “Central/Mountain” time zones. At some point, the networks stopped mentioning the Mountain time zone — which, like Central, airs programming an hour earlier than the Eastern and Pacific time zones. In this “Black-ish” spot, the time zone references Eastern/Central instead of Central/Mountain. Here are a few more promos airing on Tuesday night: “Queens”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaYt8ObJobM "The Bachelor" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6kN8GG6KcM "The Rookie" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12WTNVq6ePM "Big Sky" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI-epk0mhDo "Jimmy Kimmel Live" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNQ3JjnKXzU "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhGltHp5W1I “We really wanted these spots to feel authentic to the era and our team had a blast dusting off some of the old ABC graphics, logos and fonts from the ’80s,” Ryan said. “The ‘Black-ish’ spot features the original ‘Now is the Time’ theme music from a 1981 network sizzle, and ‘The Bachelor’ is a tribute to another classic ABC sitcom that we think fans will immediately recognize and love,” she added, referring to the ABC comedy from that era “Three’s Company.” Go to Original Article Tags: ABC, TV, Announcer, Variety, Promo, Promo: Retro, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Queens, Black-ish, Big Sky, The Bachelor, The Rookie, Dick Clark, Ryan Seacrest, New Year's Eve
